Myopia

Understanding Myopia With Trusted Opticians in Knaphill

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a common eye condition that results in blurred or reduced distance vision. It is usually caused by the eye growing too large, which prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina.

Currently, it affects about 30% of the population in the UK, but is increasing rapidly due to our changing lifestyles and increasing interaction / reliance on computers and digital devices. Left untreated, Myopia can increase the risk of developing other medical eye problems, such as Glaucoma, Macular disease and Retinal detachments.

Risk Factors:

Myopia most commonly affects children between 6 and 14 years, as the eyes are naturally growing in that time, in line with body growth, however it can develop at any age.

Early Detection and treatment of Myopia at a young age can help slow progression and reduce the risk of medical eye problems.

Children who are more at risk are those who:

  • Have a family history of Myopia
  • Study close up for long periods
  • Consistently use computers and digital devices
  • Do not spend enough time outdoors

Symptoms of Myopia

The main symptom is blurry distance vision but the following could also be symptoms of Myopia:

  • Struggling to read the board in a class room
  • Sitting too close to the TV
  • Headaches
  • Tired Eyes / rubbing eyes

How Penny & Hayter Opticians in Knaphill can help:

In simple cases, Myopia can be successfully treated with standard glasses or contact lenses.

However, in younger children whose prescriptions are more severe, we have methods to help slow the progression, called Myopia management.
